I remember a time when I started seriously exercising at the gym; specifically weight training. There was a guy who was about my age who I sparked a conversation with and found out he JUST jumped on board working out as well. We had basically the goals and workout plan and at times worked out with each other (need a lot of spotting while weight training). I would say we had this going on for about 3 months until one day he never showed up to the gym.
Fast forward a year later and I see this guy walk through the gym doors. Naturally we sparked a conversation as we were excited to see each other. There had been quite some time that passed and we were catching up on a bunch of things.
Then it happened….
He looked at me and began with ALL the excuses in the world as to why he hadn’t been at the gym in about a year. The funny part was, I wasn’t even thinking about any of this, as I was genuinely happy to see him. All of a sudden in the midst of this flood of excuses, he pats me on the arm and says, “well hey, I can always jump on your “program” of bodybuilding…nothing “the juice” couldn’t handle right?!?!”….(he was referring to steroids)
I was appalled! First of all that had to have been one of the biggest insults to a whole YEAR worth of hardcore training and dieting. He tried to downplay all my hard work (6 days a week of working out) into a pathetic word that carried a meaning of “cheating” and “not earned”…steroids.
The conversation took a turn I never seen coming. I simply said, “hey man, don’t be mad at me because I stuck with my workout plan.” and I walked away.
What was the difference here? Life happened to me too, I just decided to continue to play hard even if I was injured. I did nothing special other than give a little “extra” on the days I had the biggest obstacles. He simply caved into the excuses and allowed them to keep him trapped for WHOLE YEAR!
There was a trick to my “extra”…
