What would you do if there is a sack of money laying in the middle of the street? Would you pick it up and report it? Or would you take it home without saying a word…and ultimately spend it? It is a VERY interesting question to pose. I hear all kinds of answers when I ask this question to my audience.
The problem with EVERYONE’S answer is that it is as hypothetical as the question. Sure, you said that you would “report” the sack of money to the authorities, but was that just to sound good in front of other people? Or would you really follow through with what you said?
The other thing you may want to think about is that how the answers were presented to you. Did you simply choose one of my selected answers or did you create a new resolve yourself? For example, if you found this sack of money, you could also take some for yourself and report the remaining stash.
The point I am trying to make is that we have the ability to use our brains to make decisions and it is the thoughts we developed during these thinking periods that determine our actions. Whether your thoughts are limited by other people or your own hindrances, the actions we take from our thoughts REALLY define who we are.
We tend to be DIFFERENT individuals when we are around other people, BUT the real test in character is who we are in private. Who are you when nobody is looking? That is the REAL question. You can tell me ALL your good attributes, how responsible you are, and how great of a citizen you would be by returning the sack of money, but what REALLY matters is what you would ACTUALLY do when nobody is around.
Who we are behind closed doors is imperative to our overall success in life. You can tell me you read 15 books a week, but if you really don’t, the only person you are hurting is yourself. We MUST be real with ourselves and STOP trying to fool everyone into thinking we are people WE REALLY ARE NOT!
At the end of the day, we are simply lying to ourselves. Real character is built and maintained by being the person we say we are behind closed doors. To act in accordance with who we say we are regardless of WHERE we are and WHO is around is being REAL with ourselves,
I want to challenge you today to do a little critical thinking. Think about the scenario I gave and develop thoughts about what you would REALLY do in that situation. It is important we not only KNOW ourselves, but develop the people we are. And if it means challenging our character, then that’s what it is.
It’s not going to be easy at first, but in the end, you will be a BETTER, more evolved person. Take the time today and let’s make sure our thoughts are in line with our desired actions. Build your character TODAY!
To Your Massive Success,
