Why Young Women Should Consider Sponsors for Career Advancement
When it comes to advancing in your career, doing it alone may seem a little daunting or even scary. This could be especially true if you are new to the job market, returning to civilian life, or embarking upon a brand new career. It is always a good idea to have someone in your corner to help you along the path to success, and a sponsor could be just the push and motivation you need. According to Forbes, a sponsor is “a more aggressive cousin of mentorship, involving advocating for the advancement of high-potential individuals in their careers.” In other words, a sponsor is someone who will put their reputation on the line to advocate for you.
Consider the Stats
When deciding whether or not finding a sponsor is the right career move, take a look at the stats. According to research conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation (CTI), 68 percent of sponsored women feel that they are advancing in their career at a steady and satisfactory pace compared with 57 percent of their unsponsored peers.
The research also showed that sponsors have a positive effect on pay raises and leadership
How Are Sponsors Beneficial?
A sponsor is your advocate for success as you move up the corporate ladder, but what exactly can they do for you? According to The Balance, sponsors can actively put your name in the ring when an opening is available that matches your skills, experience, and abilities, and personally contact the decision-maker who has the authority to say “yes” to the opportunity or promotion for which you are being considered. Consider your sponsor to be your reference.
Sponsors also have the connections to match you up with others who can help you make progress. In addition, a sponsor has likely been in your shoes at point or another in their career, so they can serve as a toolbox of advice, tips, and personal experience. Take advantage of this and learn from their experience to create your own.
Think of the relationship with your sponsor as a strategic partnership. In an interview for a Monster article, Steve Lanegerud says that the “role of sponsor is to ask what you can do for an employer, not what can be done to develop you as a person and/or professional.” He also notes, “The focus is on creating, demonstrating and leveraging work product that can be used to position you for advancement either internally or externally.” In this strategic partnership, your sponsor takes an active role in your career advancement, and helps you to become more visible.
Qualities to Look for in a Sponsor
It is important to know what qualities to be on the lookout for when trying to find a sponsor. Your fellow colleagues are great, but your sponsor needs to be someone with influence and power. CoreAxis describes the qualities of a good sponsor as being trustworthy and having a “thorough understanding of an organization’s culture and tacit rules.”
When looking for a sponsor, The Balance suggests seeking out opportunities to interact with people in senior positions, so consider joining networking or professional groups in your organization or field. Individuals in your family and friendship circles who have influence in the field you are in or desire to be in will be helpful too. Don’t be afraid to approach them and simply ask to have coffee and pick their brain. Who knows what might become of it – maybe a sponsorship.

As we enter 2016, I wanted to put something together that I learned in 2015. It was something I already knew, but this years results, BLEW MY MIND!
Since this will be the LAST blog post for 2015, I wanted to give you something REAL value. Something that will set you up for success in 2016.
There are SO many “keys” people contribute to success to that it has now clear to everyone that the road to success is an individual journey. Everyone will have different experiences and apply their own “keys” in life to attain victory.
I have notebooks jammed packed with “The Key To Success” written at the top of the optimistic pages in my attempt to quench my hunger for “the truth”. Some of these “keys” do work and others are missing information and generally misleading.
I wanted to give you something that WILL WORK no matter the path to success you take. There is a LOT of junk out there spreading confusion to audiences worldwide. It’s bad for the people and I want to change that once and for all!
Ultimately, you have to understand that this is YOUR journey and there will be none like it. You may be able to relate to folks and apply pointer’s from them, but the truth is, you will have to figure it out yourself. What works for you, may not work for me. Even if someone were to give you a step by step playbook, there will ALWAYS be a variable in the equation. YOU.
You are unique in every way, including your journey to the top. Knowing yourself is extremely critical to your success. Capitalizing on your strengths and working on your weaknesses, you will face situations only YOU can solve.
Now that I have made that clear, I want to share “the secret sauce”. What I love about “the secret sauce” is that EVERYONE has access to it at absolutely NO COST! In fact, you CREATE “the secret sauce” yourself. This is what I love most about it. It’s available for ANYONE who makes a serious decision to use it and change their lives FOREVER!
So, what is “the secret sauce”?
That’s it! The secret sauce is momentum.
Momentum is an extremely POWERFUL tool the most successful people in the world use to achieve RAPID RESULTS. It carries with it a weight that cannot even be measured.
Momentum comes with a forceful influx of energy. This energy can be used in various ways, but it’s important the majority of it be used in actions that will either maintain or progress the momentum.
Maintaining momentum actually takes LESS effort than getting it started. Getting things started can be a rough time, but the rewards are well worth the efforts. It can be absolutely tiring, but once certain things are in place, momentum will assist you in the efforts. This is why I call it “The Secret Sauce”!
Why not have help along the way?
Things can get exhausting, but having momentum will allow you BRIEF resting periods without losing much of your pace. These resting periods cannot be TOO LONG or momentum will eventually come to a halt.
How do you get momentum?
It’s ONE day at a time. Simply conquer today and do EVERYTHING you can to attain your goals. Push the limits each and everyday. Do it for a full-week. From there, do it for two full-weeks. We are creatures of habits and if you could JUST tap into this powerful source, momentum will pick up & results will begin pouring in! After your third week, you will begin seeing momentum tag along with habits.
The special thing about momentum is that I can promise you, you will feel completely MOTIVATED to do MORE; to take more action. It’s exciting because once you get enough momentum, even your “not so productive” days will seem as though so much is being accomplished.
The funny thing about momentum is that it is addicting. You do NOT want to let the momentum slow down or peter out. Once it starts going, keep it alive as long as possible! You will accomplish so much in such little time, it will amaze you.
This secret sauce will add to the motivation factor, yielding results that will blow your mind in 2016! Go out there and begin to create momentum in your life, as it will make a world of differences in your results.
